Trapani has very ancient origins. According to the historical and archaeological studies, it would be founded by the Elymians (legendary people with greek – fenician origins) as a goods yard and emporium connected to Erice, and then fortified and extended by Carthaginian people.
The geographic location has been an advantage and a disadvantage for the town, in fact from roman people to arabyans, but also spanish people and normans tried to conquer it in order to have the domination of the Meditarannean sea.
The most important monuments of the city are St. Lorence CathedraI, St. Mary of Jesus, the “Collegio” church and Purgatory church, which inside preserves the sacred rapresentation of “Misteri di Trapani”.
Torre di Ligny, is on the extreme peak of the city, originally it was a control tower (against the Saracen threat), now you can admire there the history and prehistory museum.
In Trapani you have to see “Santuario dell'Annunziata” and “Pepoli Museum”, where there are important sculptures and precious corals.
You can not miss “Trapani Saline” and the Stagnone Island.
